Dear Friends,
We began our Stewardship Campaign on Sunday, October 18 under the leadership of Dick Hite. Each member either has or will be receiving a letter from Dick about this year's campaign which is of particular importance because 2010 will be the 125th anniversary of Plymouth Congregational Church. Many of you remember our centennial celebration in 1985 and now we are embarking on another milestone in the history of our church. Last week the congregation approved a budget for 2010 that includes a very modest increase over this year's pledge budget. Even for those of you who have not been longtime Plymouth members, I think it is important to remember that this church has grown and prospered thru a number of challenges. Our connection with the founding of Fairmount College, now Wichita State University, is one of the many education-oriented initiatives promoted by early Congregationalists in this area and in other parts of the country.
In the early years, this church was known as the United Congregational Church, but in 1942 the membership voted to change the name to Plymouth Congregational Church. The beautiful church structure we occupy was built in 1921, added onto in 1952, and rebuilt in 1998-2000 after a devastating fire in 1998. There have been ups and downs in our history, just as there are with any church, but the surge of energy:, membership growth, new programming opportunities, and a very promising future has been greatly enhanced with the ministerial leadership of Don Olsen and Lisa Dembkowski.
I don't think I need to tell you how important your strong financial support is to the continued growth and progress of Plymouth Church as we enter the 125th year of our ministry in the Congregational Way. Evidence exists everywhere you look that this is a church on the move with so many things to offer all age groups. The video on this page highlights the very active life of Plymouth Church and the commitment that members of all ages have to the continued stability and growth of this congregation.
Take time to view this brief video and then consider how much this church means to you. We are bound by a covenant that calls us to worship, work and serve together in the furtherance of our church's ministry to people of all ages and backgrounds. Your pledge is extremely important in insuring that Plymouth's future remains as strong as our past.
Thank you,
Steve Woods
